BACKGROUND/AIM:
The impact of the English language on the medical science is increasing. Because of this reason some of the Turkish medical schools expect their students to use English language at least at a basic level. The students who don't meet this criterion had to spend a whole semester with English lessons. In this study we investigated the effect of these classes on the students' self-respect views.
METHODS:
Ondokuz Mayis University Medical School had changed its curriculum to problem-based learning two years ago. First curriculum students were divided into two groups as English preparation classes (n=114) or first-year classes (n=83) after an English language level test. After one year of problem-based experience 82 second-year students (Participation ratio=98,7%) and 96 students (Participation ratio= 83,4%) who were in preparation classes replied the Self-respect Scale developed by Rosenberg (1963) voluntarily. The increasing positive numeric values obtained from the test were accepted as the correlation of decreasing self-respect.
RESULTS:
There was a statistically significant difference between two groups (x2 =6,706, p=0,035). In the preparation group 37 (38,5%) students had a high level of self-respect level high while 35 (36,5%) had medium and 24 (25,0%) had low. The same ratios were 30 (41,7%), 29 (40,3%) and 13 (18,1%) in the second year students respectively.
CONCLUSION:
The preparation classes are surely depresses the students and lowers their self-respect views. This results may be explained by not only with the unnecessary financial costs and the delay of self-identifying the new life role as becoming doctors.
