This monograph is part of larger research, which deals with the comparative health study between the primary care models in Brazil and Venezuela. The objective in this first research stage is to become acquainted with the primary care model, which has been implemented for approximately 3 years in Venezuela, the Mision Barrio Adentro I. The method utilized was the case study of the Mision Barrio Adentro, through document analysis and an observation schedule and interviews, mainly obtained in the field, carried out during the months of July and August. The results obtained demonstrated that the Mision Barrio Adentro is structuring itself rapidly, with the construction of care-consulting units for the general population and the development of the National Public Health System, which guarantees a reference and a counter-reference to the Mision. The process is based on teamwork and the predominance of medicinal activities, with the development of some prevention activities and strong participation of the general population. The results obtained show that the goals are being met, however there are few studies to demonstrate the results achieved. Ultimately, becoming acquainted with the Mision Barrio Adentro represented the widening of understanding about the different primary health care models implemented in Latin America, in a singular context of social transformation.
