Purpose.
The registration of air transportations via National centre of First Aid (EKAB), which took place during the period of 2000-2005, and the comparison between the years 2000-2002 and the years 2003-2005, when the Healthcare centre of Megisti had been staffed with a Director of General Medicine.
Material and Method.
During the five-year period of 2000-2005, 15 air transportations had been made in total. There were 7 surgical incidences and 8 medical ones. The division per year was:2000 - 3, 2001 - 5, 2002 - 5 (twice the same patient), 2003 - 0, 2004 - 1, 2005 -1. The 7 surgery incidences included 5 traumatic ones and 2 non traumatic ones. The 8 medical incidences included 4 incidences of the cardiological sector, 2 neurological incidences, an incidence of fever and a mixed type incidence
Results.
During 2000-2002, 13 air transportations had been made via National centre of First Aid (EKAB), while during 2003-2005 there were only 2. All the patients mentioned above are in life, except the one with the heavy head injury, who died two days after his air transportation.
Conclusion.
The staffing with a consultant of General Medicine, the training of non specialized doctors on emergency incidences and the creation of a short stay medical unit under the supervision and the coordination of the General Medicine consultant, reduce the unnecessary and expensive air transportations, even from distant island areas.
