OP-478 : Prevalence of anemia in patients of a Family Health Team in Dourados-MS - Brazil

Study the prevalence of anaemia in patients of a Family Health Team in Dourados, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

Quantitative, analytic, retrospective study. The subjects of the research were patients of a Family Health Team in Dourados-MS-Brazil. Their blood counts in the period of February 2008 to March 2009 were evaluated. Pregnant women were excluded. Data were collected through a form with age, gender and haematologic conditions of the subjects and they are presented in graphs and tables, with statistic treatment. Ethical principles defined by National Health Council of Brazil were observed.

A high prevalence of anaemia in all age groups were found. Children had the highest prevalence of anaemia. Iron replacement therapy was successful in most of the cases, resulting in suspicious of iron deficiency anaemia as the major cause of that clinical manifestation in the studied people.

The high prevalence of anaemia in the subjects of this research can cause a great impact on the quality of life, leading to symptoms such as weakness, tiredness, indisposition to daily activities, growth delay and cognitive difficulty. Based on this research, it is possible to develop strategies in order to prevent that finding and therefore improve considerably the health status of this population.
