Child abuse and neglect still continues to be a problem in Turkey and all over the world. This study is performed by Trakya University Department of Family Medicine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, awareness and attitudes of family physicians who are the gatekeepers of the primary health care. This descriptive study included 95 family physicians who were working in family health centres in Edirne. Data was collected by a questionnaire of 80 items prepared by the researcher including demographic data. The data were analysed with SPSS for Windows 19,0 program using non-parametric tests. Out of 95 family physicians 92,6 % were family doctors and 7,4% were family medicine specialists. Out of these physicians 35,8% were female, 64,2% were male and 72,6% had children. Their mean age was 39,76,9 years. Awareness about child abuse and neglect were significantly higher in female physicians. During their practice 96,8% of the participants considered child abuse and neglect, 35,8% were considering this matter since 10 years. Only 21,1% had come across with child abuse and neglect cases during last one year. Participants related that the reason of not reporting these type of cases mostly depends (55,8%) on the insufficient suspicion of the problem. Concerning age awareness in child abuse and neglect was inversely proportional with a low degree. %56,8 percent of respondents knowledge about child abuse and neglect during their education to be statistically significant levels higher than that of the participants had not received training in this area. If an opportunity was provided 83,2% of the participants were willing to get education on child abuse and neglect and 93,7% of them wanted to get information on the results of the study we performed. As a result according to the data we obtained it seems that the physicians have insufficient knowledge and false attitudes on the subject of child abuse and neglect. Education is important for improving knowledge and attitudes. Therefore training on child abuse and neglect is necessary not only during medical education and should be a part of continuous medical education as well.
